Begin your journey with a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla in the Khumbu region. Try to secure a left-side seat for amazing views. Lukla is accessible only by air or on foot. Start your trek through the village’s cobblestone paths, entering the forest trails. Before departing, obtain the first of two permits and keep it handy for checkpoints. The trek involves a gentle ascent from 300 meters to Phakding, where you’ll rest for the night, passing numerous prayer wheels and stones inscribed with Buddhist mantras along the way.
Today presents a challenging trek. Follow the Dudh Kosi River, crossing two notable suspension bridges. Expect a series of small ascents and descents while passing unique carved Buddhist stones. Stop for lunch at Monjo village, the entry point to Sagarmatha National Park, where you’ll get the second permit checked later. After entering the park, descend to Jorsalle village, then tackle the steep ascent through dense forests to Namche Bazaar, where on clear days, you may catch your first view of Mount Everest.
Consider visiting the museum and the Everest View Hotel, the world’s highest hotel.
Ascend steadily to Khumjung, offering spectacular views of surrounding mountains. Depart with a gentle descent before climbing out of the valley, leaving the main EBC trail for the first time. The path winds through shrubs and trees until reaching Mongla, a picturesque village with an ancient stupa. After a break, descend 350 meters before climbing 400 meters to Dole, passing through forests and rhododendrons.
After a brief descent, begin a steady climb through barren terrain. This marks your first day above the tree line, with the distant roar of the river accompanying you. Watch for Nepal’s national bird, the Danphe, known for its colorful tail. Ascend 400 meters before descending 50 meters into Machhermo.
Prepare for a day of climbing with breathtaking views. Walk alongside grazing yaks and cross a bridge over the river leading to the first of the five Gokyo Lakes. After a brief climb, visit Longpongo Lake, then Taboche Tso, before reaching Gokyo village on the shore of Dudh Pokhari Lake.
Today features a steep climb to Gokyo Ri for panoramic views of the world’s four highest peaks: Cho Oyu, Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu, as well as the stunning Ngozumpa Glacier. Afterward, return to Gokyo to pack up, then cross the glacier to reach Dragnag village, navigating crevasses along the way.
